Gyms are one of the places most affected by the global pandemic of the Covid-19.
An investigation shows that gyms do not represent a risk of contagion of Covid-19.
A large-scale academic study has concluded that "there is no greater threat of the spread of COVID-19 in sports facilities", even when intensive training is carried out.
The research, the first of its kind in Europe, studied 3,764 people between the ages of 18 and 64, who didn't have relevant pathologies for COVID-19. Approximately half (1,896) of the people attended gyms, while the other half (1,868) a control group, had not access
A team of researchers from the University of Oslo investigated the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus responsible for COVID-19), and whether it was attributable to gyms. "Our trial showed not virus transmission or increase in COVID-19 disease related to the opening of gymnasiums", said the boss.
In the group that trained in the gym, 81.8% trained at least once and 38.5% visited a gym six times or more. Of the 3,016 people who returned PCR tests for SARS-CoV-2, there was a positive test, but, although the positive person was part of the 'gymnastics group', they had not visited the gym before the positive test and the screening of contacts found that he had actually been infected at his workplace.
In their conclusion, the researchers stated: "By maintaining good hygiene and social distancing routines, our trial didn't show virus transmission or increase in COVID-19 disease related to the opening of gyms."
