After more than a year of a pandemic, one of the experiences we miss the most has been traveling. However, with the mobility and gradual opening of the communities within Spain, the possibility of doing tourism becomes more tangible. Of course, in 2021 the new and only way of traveling that citizens concerned about the effects of the climate emergency should consider is one in which it is possible to do so in a sustainable way.

The pandemic has prompted the sector to take steps to adapt. But changing the model is not a new debate. The director of the university master's degree in Sustainable Tourism and ICT at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC), Soledad Morales, explains that reflections have been taking place for a long time in spaces for debate that were beginning to be fertile, but the pandemic has slowed down these debates and has focused on recovery. In addition, it warns of the forecasts that suggest that the figures for 2019 will be exceeded. It recognizes that it has a certain feeling of pessimism because what could have been a great opportunity to rethink the tourism model and bring new actions, is not being carried out cape. He regrets that there are no new rethinking towards a more sustainable tourism.

But how is this transition to another tourism model to be made? It depends on the entire tourism ecosystem. It is important that regulations are aimed at generating tourism that is beneficial for all.

That tourism is a sustainable sector will also come hand in hand with consumer behavior. Use more sustainable means of transport such as the train in front of the plane or make longer stays in the chosen destinations that allow more spending, thus multiplying its effect on the local economy.

Searching for services that are managed by the local population, staying in accommodations that are respectful with the environment, consuming zero kilometer products or taking a deeper immersion in the culture of the destination will also contribute to a more sustainable tourism.

In Spain, the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism is preparing the Sustainable Tourism Strategy of Spain 2030 with the aim of laying the foundations for the transformation of Spanish tourism towards a model of sustained and sustainable growth. A strategy that is part of the goals of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. Apply measures today to take care of the planet, also tomorrow. The Brundlant report already mentioned it in the late 1980s when it spoke of the ability not to compromise future generations by meeting current needs.
