Taco Dibbits - FORUM ON EUROPEAN CULTURE

In the spring of 2023, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam will dedicate a retrospective exhibition to the 17th century master Johannes Vermeer for the first time in its history. With loans from around the world, it promises to be the largest Vermeer exhibition in history. The museum itself has four masterpieces by the artist.

The exhibition is a collaboration between the Rijksmuseum and the Mauritshuis in The Hague. Preparations are already underway. Among other things, both museums investigate Vermeer's art, his artistic choices and motivations for his compositions, as well as the process of making his paintings.

The exhibition will include masterpieces such as' The Girl with a Pearl Earring '(Mauritshuis, The Hague),' The Geographer '(Städel Museum, Frankfurt,' Woman Writing a Letter '(National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin) and' Woman with the Balance '(National Gallery of Art, Washington DC).

In addition, works that have never been shown to the public in the Netherlands before will be on display, including the recently restored 'Woman Reading a Letter at the Window' from the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden. The restoration has revealed the presence of a Cupid on the wall that was hidden.

Taco Dibbits, director of the Rijksmuseum, says: “Vermeer is one of the most famous painters in the Netherlands, along with Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Mondrian. We would not have thought it possible that so many museums were willing to lend their masterpieces. We are incredibly grateful to them for that. With this exhibition we can introduce a new generation to Vermeer painting at the highest level and present the results of the latest research
Martine Gosselink, director of the Mauritshuis, is very satisfied with this collaboration: “We are very happy to loan 'The Girl with a Pearl Earring', Vermeer's most famous painting in the world, together with 'View of Delft' and 'Diana and her nymphs. ' Yes, we will miss her terribly, but a Vermeer show without 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' is simply not a Vermeer show. "

2023 will mark almost thirty years since the last major Vermeer exhibition was held in the Netherlands. It took place at the Mauritshuis in The Hague in 1996. It brought together 22 paintings by the Delft master and attracted more than 450,000 visitors, making it the most visited exhibition in the museum's history.

Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) lived and worked in Delft. His work is best known for its calm and introverted interior scenes, its unprecedented use of bright and colorful light, and its illusionism. Unlike Rembrandt, Vermeer left a remarkably small work with some 35 paintings. Because they are among the masterpieces in collections and museums around the world, their work is only rendered exceptionally.
