Lyle and Erik Menendez, the brothers convicted in 1996 of murdering their parents.
Why did the Menendez brothers kill their parents?
On August 20, 1989, Jose and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez were shot to death in their Beverly Hills home. Nearly seven years, three trials and thousands of hours of television coverage later, their sons, Lyle and Erik Menendez, were convicted of their murders and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. That sentence is now subject to change, as the Los Angeles County district attorney announced Thursday that the Menendez brothers should be resentenced based on new evidence in the case.
Following the murders, Dr. Oziel reached out to his former patient Erik and began counseling the younger Menendez brother once again. Soon enough, Erik confessed to killing his parents. Oziel confided in Judalon Smyth, with whom he was having an extramarital affair; she would ultimately play a major role in the case.
The therapy sessions continued and Oziel eventually recorded Erik and Lyle confessing to the murders. Erik said they had done it to put his mother "out of her misery," while Lyle made it clear that they were both involved in the crime.
Smyth and Oziel had a rocky relationship (she claimed he was controlling and abusive) and after he allegedly attacked her, Smyth contacted Beverly police to reveal that the Menendez brothers confessed to the murder of their parents. She even had an audio tape of the confessions.
The discussion about why the Menendez brothers killed their parents only intensified after a couple of recent projects on Netflix. Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez
